    Ticker

    • Every financial instrument or index in Bloomberg is accessed by using a ticker symbol and followed by a yellow market sector key
    • For example
      • Microsoft company à MSFT  US
      • Dow Jones Industrial Average à INDU

    Menu

    • Bloomberg is menu driven
    • There is a hierarchy of menu for each market sector
    • Within a menu, functions and commands are organised under categories

    Mnemonics

    • Mnemonics are shortcuts to functions or commands
    • For example HP for Historical Price, WEI for World Equity Indices
    • Security-specific functions: you must have a loaded security to apply the functions
    • Non-security specific functions: provide information on an entire market sector and do not require a loaded security

    Auto-complete

    • If you do not know the Ticker for example, you can start typing in the Company Name, and Auto-complete will start giving you a number of options to select from. If you find a perfect match, click on the option
    • For example, if you type “apple” (do not hit ), a drop down list will appear giving you the name of securities with “apple” in the Name (in this case AAPL US Equity is the main page for APPLE)
    • You can also use Auto-complete to figure out some of the codes. For example, type GOOG P/E will give you several options for viewing the Price to Earnings ratio for Google
